STACIE TURNER'S NIGERIAN REUNION (PICS)

I am a big fan of the Real Housewives series of reality shows. Real Houseweives of Orange County, Real Housewives of Atlanta, Real Housewives of New York, Real Housewives of New Jersey, Real Housewives of DC and my favorite, Real Housewives of Beverly Hills (hi, Jiggy!). When any of these shows come on, my husband quietly bids me adieu and leaves me to my guilty pleasure, heehee.

Stacie Turner is on the Real Housewives of DC and during the first season, she explained her story about being put up for adoption by her white mother. Upon finding her birth mother, she also discovered that her father was an Igbo man and wanted to find him.

For the 'unconverted', Stacie's white mother was in the Peace Corps in Nigeria and obviously had a relationship with Stacie's father. The product was a black child that she felt compelled to give away. Now, people can say what they want, but I for one, do not have the heart to judge the lady on those grounds. Having a child outside of wedlock, is never a joke and having a black child must have created a serious difficulty for the lady given the times she lived in.

But, when this lady was reunited with Stacie, she refused to tell her husband and children about her black  daughter. My opinion, hiding a child from his/her family is never a good move. Nope, no way. And then, Stacie's mother refused to give her the information she needed to find her blood father! Maybe it's very Nigerian of me, but every child deserves to know where they come from. Nigerian culture demands it in fact.

Anyway, my girlfriends and I talked about this woman, die! We all hoped she would find her family. She got some help from the Nigerian Embassy and at the time I worried that they were setting themselves up for failure. After all, Nigeria is a large country and I was nervous that the embassy would have to open a desk to find Nigerians for people. That would be a disaster. Anyway, the embassy came through for her and it looks like Stacie had a Nigerian family reunion. It appears that her family is from Amaocha Afara in Mbaitoli, Imo State and from the looks of the pictures, she enjoyed Nigeria and meeting her blood relatives.

Can I say I am also extremely pleased that she travelled with a Nigerian air carrier, Arik Air (which probably gave her and her family/friends free tickets and if they didn't then shame on them because they just got free advertising)

And even her Nigerian-based Delta Sigma Theta sisters showed her some love.

Now, I'm not going to lie, I have to just say what I'm feeling right now. I desperately hope and pray that this woman's family members are not like some family members that most Nigerians are familiar with. I remain amazed at the stories of people trying to take advantage of their relatives and use them without any regard to the fact that blood is thicker than water. I know not every Nigerian family is like this, and anyone that feels that way is ignorant, but, who understands what I'm talking about. If I could share half the stories I have heard? My own mother was swindled by her 'favorite' cousin! To the tune of at least a million Naira.

That being said, I am happy Stacie found the missing link, her blood relatives. I cannot imagine what it must have been like, given that she wanted to know who she was and where she came from. And, I can't wait for this aspect of her life to be featured on the show next season.

Sidenote: Hmm, there's a TTTEC question that actually relates to this matter. I think I will put it before the TTTEC crew but not this week. So, there will be a TTTEC question from me on Friday the 28th of January. Swing by on Monday the 24th for a normal post, however. It's about Shine Shine and I...
