NA WETIN BE DIS?

Someone, please, biko, help me understand.

I stumbled upon a couple Youtube videos and to say that I am disturbed is an understatement.

Why do young men and women think that it is their job in life to do the raunchiest things on film and then upload them to the world wide web? And, no, these kids do not have a career in the sex industry. At least not yet. They just think its cool to show their 'goodies' online to random strangers.

Whatever happened to decency, subtlety and morality?

I am not saying that people should not enjoy themselves, but haba, must you let the whole world know that you are some sort of 'sexual' superstar? This goes for boys, girls, gay, straight and everything in between. What is going on and why the need for such excessive exhibitionism?

Take a look at the following clips. Help me understand, because as a mother of young children who only get to watch an hour of PBS programming (i.e. Sesame Street, Berenstein Bears, Caillou) a day, I am nervous about the world outside my home, or rather on the internet.

Don't get me wrong, I am sure that many of us ladies wish we could dance like this young man here. In fact one could argue that he dances better than most women. But, is all this really necessary? Na wa oh! I will definitely have filters on my computer once these kids get a little older. Matter of fact, I should put it up now, since TK and TE have discovered the fun of clicking on random things on the computer. I no want wahala.

Anyway, more power to this man's elbow oh!

And it gets worse -

Um, really? When did young ladies forget to be classy? And, why, for goodness sake? And, believe me, clips like this are all over Youtube. Dear, Lord!

Do you agree with such exhibitionism? If so, please educate me. I personally think it is getting a bit excessive and thank God it isn't in my face everyday, but, I am still a little perturbed that people feel the need to do this and even worse things online.

Hello Grand soeur,
So I think that whats changed now is the idea of the body and how we relate to it. The body is now the sole form of art, self expression and what carries us around. It is no longer just something to be covered while we display all the other things that form the whole. Tattoos, diets, piercings, tight clothes, natural or unnatural hair...all these things have taught us that Our body is ourselves and if your aim is to display yourself to the world, the best and surest and fastest way is to display that said body, in all her/his grosteque beauty.
Before, if you wanted to be known, you would write beautifully, create a new world, or make computers, start businesses, and generally display your quirkiness and people noticed and rewarded that. But thats all changed and the Young have learnt rather quickly and they have adapted to that.
Personally, I think its lovely and fantastique. I do not see modesty as a form of morality. Modesty is not something we care for in our generation. We must go all out...and I must say I find it all rather bizzarely brilliant. but then again...I am sort of weird. There is a confidence in baring all to the world and fully ready to withstand the consequence...at least I hope they are. sigh...I am too old for this world. :D

As troublesome as Temite's opinion is,truth is the situation really isnt going to get better. Times have involved. In the process, skirts will hike shorter, bikini's will flaunt more proudly, hips will dance/thrust harder and freedom of speech will make such videos even freer-to-view.
In my opinion, anybody who is going to stick to conservative/xtian ideals in these times owes it to themselves to work out-probably by themselves for themselves,so help us God!And when we accept that that's just the way it is, it might make the battle easier to deal with!

Its good to consider the children, but ever paused to consider your man. My summise is,everyman is mostly as good in this regard as "not-yet-caught".(Ask Tiger.W,Bill.C,etc) If you want to start a fire, sit face to face with your man and ask him "just how bad are you addicted to internet porn", then watch for the lie induced flicker in his eyes. If u ain't looking for trouble, trouble is looking for you-LOL,on your laptop,in your office,on your streets..These days, its a bloody affair being the so called "man-of-integrity". And that is telling it from the man's POV.
My few cents.

Things like this have always happened. Not every young person would behave like these losers. 50 or 100 years ago there were people around with a casual attitude to morals. Just the web didn't exist and porn came in filthy mags and brown envelopes or dodgy cinemas, so bad images weren't readily accessible. Bad things happen in African communities that have never heard of You Tube or FaceBook. Just train your children right and talk to them about self respect and ensure they have high levels of confidence and self-belief and they won't do these crazy things. Use software called NetNanny which keeps all these crazy things out of your computer and let them avoid TV channels like MTV Base and BET and only let them watch positive images.
Alchohol and drugs are a big factor. Help your kids avoid these altogether.

It's not going to get better SSD, unfortunately. The only thing we can do is to pray that God'll help us to raise our children right. Amen!

Have a lovely week.

Did Temite say she thinks its fantastic?????? Bizarely brilliant???

Small Mummy, it is sad to say that in todays time decency has been hanged, sublety was beheaded and morality is now a yardstick for the 'prude'.

It is sad that these things are becoming more and more acceptable as the days go by.

i think there is a difference between being confidence in your body and being just plain nasty.these women in those videos are just plain nasty.
'very soon our kids would have to visit a museum to know what classy looks like'.-dre.

I agree with Leggy's comment...Body confidence is one thing...displaying ur nudity like a cheap piece of metal for all to see (and for free too) is just crazy...may God help our children...

My point is that the body is a canvas...you draw your art on it. Some artist are modest and restrained and some are wilde and crazy and sexual. Its all valid and I celebrate it all. I am able to find beauty in all forms of art (to my mother`s dismay). That is the point...the Judeo Christian (cant believe I just used that phrase...how pretentious) idea that bodies should be covered and sold to ones husband...(SMH at myself...mischievious elf) is new and as far as I am concerned...Unafrican. The idea that modesty should thrump imodesty(insert appropriate word here) is subjective...but then again...these are all opinions.

Dearest SSd, the world moves...Our collective moods will swing towards excessive modesty once more...Soon we will have a world, where women are shrouded in veils and are forcefed before their marriages...

Off I go...before I say too much...

got there too late. THey had taken them down :( but I am sure what you saw there was not very pretty, definitely the parent blocker settings is a very good idea, one you should do asap. Having seen a couple of those kind of videos floating around, all I can say is that each to his own but that is definitely downgrading and demeaning. you just want to shake them and say i'm not supposed to care but I do, what the heck is this??

@ Temite: I understand where you are going. However, it's like a Supreme Court Justice said about porn years ago "I know it when I see it".

To suggest that the smut captured in the videos I linked to (which have apparently been removed from Youtube) is artistic...well, I'd have to say that's a stretch. Art tends to aspire towards higher ideals even when the product is questionable. Folks jiggling their butt cheeks or showing how well they can perform certain skills - can't qualify as artistic can it? That is simply an advertisement of their skills, lol!

That being said, folks have a right to do what they want, regardless of whether I like it or not. Trust, I was one of the people that supported Tuface's 'Enter the Place' video when it got banned in naija. I didn't support it on 'artistic' values though. Nevertheless, I share that to suggest that for me, I understand that even things that can be interpreted as offensive have a right to exist.

My concern with these Youtube vids is simply that young folks believe that unnecessary sexual expression and exhibitionism is self validating. (Maybe I should have gone a little further into that in the post, but honestly, I didn't want to do 'thesis'). In my opinion, it shows a lack of self esteem and confidence that is dangerous and feeds into the growing trend that infamy is good. You feel me? I'm a strong believer in young women, and men, understanding that their worth will not come from sex, beauty or other superficial things. (Yes, sex can be superficial, I know some guys reading that go vex). Who you are, how you treat others, how you use your talents to help others (no pun intended) should be most important.

Unfortunately, as you suggest, times are a changing, and gosh, I feel old. Which is sad. I just know that I have to work uber hard to ensure that my kids understand what is important in life. They will ultimately make their own choices, as in fact, I did. I just hope they and others coming up in this age of madness, will as well.

=)
